BMW 360° Virtual Tour: The Challenges of Automotive Photography
Photographing the interior of a car in 360° is considerably more complex than creating a traditional panoramic image.
Unlike architectural photography, automotive interiors offer extremely limited space for positioning the camera and equipment.
A vehicle’s dashboard, steering wheel, seats, mirrors, windows and reflective surfaces are all positioned very close to the camera.
These conditions create several technical challenges:
- Limited shooting space: Positioning the camera correctly inside a compact vehicle while maintaining a natural perspective.
- Parallax errors: Objects located very close to the lens require precise photographic techniques and careful panoramic stitching.
- Reflective materials: Glass, polished surfaces, leather and metallic finishes make lighting and exposure control especially important.
- High dynamic range: Capturing details in darker interiors while preserving the exterior view through the windows.
- Panoramic stitching: Combining multiple photographs into a seamless, high-resolution 360° environment.
Achieving a convincing result requires experience, specialized equipment and a thorough understanding of immersive image production.
The objective is to allow viewers to explore the interior of a vehicle naturally, as if they were physically sitting inside it.
Producing More Than 30 Automotive Panoramas Within 48 Hours
One of the most demanding aspects of these international automotive projects was the extremely short delivery schedule.
At major motor shows, our assignment could involve photographing more than 30 vehicle interiors, alongside exterior views of cars and exhibition stands, with delivery required within 48 hours.
This meant coordinating photography, equipment, access to vehicles, image processing and post-production within an exceptionally limited timeframe.
Every vehicle presented different challenges, from compact city cars to luxury models and experimental concept cars.
The production workflow required meticulous preparation, efficient shooting techniques and close cooperation between photographers and post-production specialists.
With the right expertise, a reliable team and careful organization, even these demanding deadlines could be achieved — although sometimes at the expense of a good night’s sleep!

The BMW VISION NEXT 100 concept car represented the brand’s vision of future mobility.
Our 360° photography documented this extraordinary vehicle and its presentation environment, allowing audiences to explore the exhibition beyond the physical event.

The London exhibition formed part of BMW’s international centenary celebrations.
